How to Convert WEBM to MP4 on Windows & Mac
Updated August 31, 2026
WEBM is the web's video format: browser screen recorders produce it, and half the clips saved off the internet arrive in it. Browsers play WEBM happily. Video editors, phones, TVs, and most other software often don't, which is why WEBM to MP4 is such a routine conversion.
This guide uses ConvertSave, a drag-and-drop converter for Windows and Mac that converts locally and offline.
How to convert WEBM to MP4
- 1
Drag your files into ConvertSave
Open ConvertSave and drag your WEBM files into the window. You can drop one file or a whole selection at once. There is no upload step, because the files never leave your computer.
- 2
Choose MP4 as the output format
Pick MP4 from the format list. ConvertSave shows the formats that make sense for the files you dropped, so MP4 is right there.

- 3
Click Convert
Hit the Convert button. Each MP4 file is saved next to the original, so you don't have to hunt through folders to find your converted files. The originals are left untouched.

Only need the audio? WEBM to MP3
For a recorded call or webinar where the picture doesn't matter, pick MP3 instead of MP4 and get just the sound. All the usual audio outputs are available: WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, AAC.
How to batch convert WEBM to MP4
Drag in as many WEBM files as you have, pick MP4 once, and convert. Each MP4 lands next to its source. We've tested batches of up to a thousand files.
Going the other way: MP4 to WEBM
Embedding video on a website is the main reason to go MP4 to WEBM, since WEBM files stream small in browsers. Same steps, WEBM as the output. MOV, MKV, and AVI outputs are there too if some tool insists.
WEBM vs MP4: what's the difference?
| WEBM | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | The web, by Google | Everything |
| Plays on | Browsers, some desktop players | Effectively everything |
| Comes from | Browser recorders, saved web clips | Phones, cameras, most software |
| Best for | Embedding video in web pages | Editing, sharing, playing anywhere |
Is WEBM to MP4 conversion safe?
The risk with converting WEBM videos isn't the conversion itself, it's where the conversion happens. Free converter websites work by uploading your file to someone else's server. You usually can't tell who runs the server, where it is, or how long your file sticks around after the conversion finishes. For personal videos and photos that's a real privacy trade, and it's the reason so many of those sites are covered in aggressive ads.
ConvertSave does the conversion on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. You can turn off Wi-Fi entirely and it still works, which is also the easy way to verify the claim. Your original file is never modified, and the converted copy is written right next to it.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting WEBM to MP4 lose quality?
The conversion re-encodes the video, but at ConvertSave's defaults you won't see a difference in normal viewing. The advanced options let you raise the quality setting for critical footage.
Why did my screen recording come out as WEBM?
Browser-based recorders and many desktop tools record straight to WEBM because the web stack supports it natively. Converting to MP4 afterward makes the recording usable in editors and on other devices.
Can I convert WEBM to MOV for editing on a Mac?
Yes. MOV is in the output list, along with MKV and AVI, using the same three steps.
Do my videos get uploaded anywhere?
No. ConvertSave converts on your computer and works offline. Your recordings never leave your machine.
Is ConvertSave free?
There's a 7-day free trial with all features unlocked. After that it's $9/month, $60/year, or $129 once for a lifetime license that covers 3 personal devices on Mac and Windows.
