How to Convert M4A to MP3 on Windows & Mac
Updated August 31, 2026
M4A is the audio format Apple uses for Voice Memos, iTunes rips, and most audio recorded on an iPhone. It sounds great, but plenty of software still wants MP3: older car stereos, audio editors, websites with upload restrictions, that one client who can't open your file. Converting M4A to MP3 gets you a file that plays absolutely everywhere.
This guide uses ConvertSave, a drag-and-drop converter for Windows and Mac. The conversion runs on your own computer, so your recordings never get uploaded to anyone's server.
How to convert M4A to MP3
- 1
Drag your files into ConvertSave
Open ConvertSave and drag your M4A files into the window. You can drop one file or a whole selection at once. There is no upload step, because the files never leave your computer.
- 2
Choose MP3 as the output format
Pick MP3 from the format list. ConvertSave shows the formats that make sense for the files you dropped, so MP3 is right there.

- 3
Click Convert
Hit the Convert button. Each MP3 file is saved next to the original, so you don't have to hunt through folders to find your converted files. The originals are left untouched.

How to convert M4A to MP3 on Windows
M4A files usually arrive on a PC from someone's iPhone: a voice memo, an interview recording, a song. Windows can play them, but a lot of Windows software still refuses them. Drag the M4A into ConvertSave, pick MP3, convert. The MP3 appears next to the M4A, ready for anything.
How to convert M4A to MP3 for free
ConvertSave's 7-day free trial has everything unlocked, including batch conversion, so a folder of voice memos costs nothing to convert. If the recordings are personal or work-related, that's also a real reason to avoid the upload-based converter sites; the safety section below explains why.
M4A to WAV, FLAC, and other audio formats
MP3 is the compatibility pick, but the same three steps produce any audio format ConvertSave supports: WAV if you're editing the audio and want an uncompressed file, FLAC for lossless archiving, OGG for open tooling, or AAC to stay in Apple's world with a smaller file.
How to batch convert M4A to MP3
Select all the M4A files, drag the whole batch in, pick MP3 once, and convert. Each MP3 is saved next to its original with the same name. We've tested batches of up to a thousand files, so years of voice memos convert in one pass.
M4A vs MP3: what's the difference?
Both are compressed audio. M4A (AAC compression) squeezes slightly better quality into the same file size, which is why Apple uses it. MP3 is older and technically less efficient, but it has thirty years of universal support behind it.
| M4A | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Apple's default (AAC audio) | Industry standard |
| Quality per megabyte | Slightly better | Slightly worse, fine at normal bitrates |
| Plays on | Apple devices, most modern software | Everything made since the late 90s |
| Comes from | Voice Memos, iTunes, iPhone recordings | Everywhere else |
Is M4A to MP3 conversion safe?
The risk with converting M4A recordings isn't the conversion itself, it's where the conversion happens. Free converter websites work by uploading your file to someone else's server. You usually can't tell who runs the server, where it is, or how long your file sticks around after the conversion finishes. For personal videos and photos that's a real privacy trade, and it's the reason so many of those sites are covered in aggressive ads.
ConvertSave does the conversion on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. You can turn off Wi-Fi entirely and it still works, which is also the easy way to verify the claim. Your original file is never modified, and the converted copy is written right next to it.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting M4A to MP3 reduce the audio quality?
Both formats are compressed, so re-encoding costs a little in theory. For voice memos and everyday listening you won't hear it. If you need a lossless copy, convert to WAV or FLAC instead; ConvertSave does both.
Can I convert iPhone voice memos to MP3?
Yes, that's the classic case. Voice Memos records M4A; share the file to your computer, drag it into ConvertSave, and convert to MP3.
What about protected M4P files from iTunes?
M4P is a different, DRM-protected format, and it needs its own approach. See our M4P to MP3 guide for the working approach.
Do my recordings get uploaded anywhere?
No. ConvertSave converts on your computer and works offline. Nothing you drag in leaves your machine.
Is ConvertSave free?
There's a 7-day free trial with all features unlocked. After that it's $9/month, $60/year, or $129 once for a lifetime license that covers 3 personal devices on Mac and Windows.
